Chapter 4

After hearing Rachel''s furious roar, the wine glass in Samuel’s hand slipped from his grip and crashed onto the floor.

"What did you say? Six years ago?"

He narrowed his eyes, a subtle flicker of anticipation crossing his face.

"Be specific and tell me the exact date."

I wanted to stop Rachel, but a chilling numbness spread through my body, leaving me too weak to even lift my arm.

"Six years ago, on august. I remember it perfectly!"

Samuel blinked rapidly.

I knew it was a habit of his whenever he was deep in thought.

But before he could piece together the memories, Becky stepped forward and spoke first.

"If we count the time, wasn’t Loretta pregnant with her sugar daddy’s child back then?

"That’s ridiculous! A pregnant woman undergoing a kidney donation surgery? How is that even possible?"

Samuel’s slightly outstretched fingers jerked back and fell limply to his side.

Rachel was on the verge of losing her mind, insisting that she was at the hospital that day, keeping watch during the surgery.

"I have the surgery records and test reports—everything is saved on my phone. If you want proof, I can show you right now!"

But Becky let out a soft sigh.

"Sam, why don’t you take a look?"

She mentioned how I had first gone to the mall to confront someone, then later made a scene at her birthday party.

If those records and reports really existed, they must have been prepared well in advance.

"Either way, let’s just assume it’s true."

Becky bent down, the hem of her pink gown, studded with tiny diamonds, soaking in the spilled wine.

She didn’t seem to care, her face full of gentle sympathy.

"I''ll cover the remaining thirty thousand dollars for Sam. You don’t have to pay it back. Loretta, is this enough for you?

"Now that you''ve gotten what you wanted, just leave. Please, don’t ruin the birthday party Sam planned so carefully for me."

Hugging my arms, I couldn''t stop myself from trembling.

My body was cold, but my heart was even colder.

Becky’s tactics were truly ruthless.

Every word she spoke sounded considerate and caring, but in reality, each one was a reminder to Samuel.

She was making it clear that everything Rachel and I had said, every piece of evidence we presented, was nothing but a carefully crafted lie to extort money.

Samuel believed her completely.

He wrapped an arm around Becky’s waist, shielding her gently behind him.

"Be careful, Becky. Don''t touch anything dirty."

Then, his gaze landed on me—filled with the same disgust one would have for trash.

I was the "dirty thing" he meant.

He called his assistant over, instructing him to transfer sixty thousand dollars to me immediately.

"Take the money and never show up in front of me again.

"If you dare harass Becky even once more, I’ll make sure you understand what it truly means to die."

Forcing a smile, I tried to say, “Thank you, Mr. Shaw.”

Rachel stepped in front of me, roaring in fury.

"Loretta was already three months pregnant when she left you! Eddie is your biological son!

"Mr. Shaw, aren’t you supposed to be so powerful? Go investigate it yourself!"

She said the doctor who performed my surgery was still around, and the hospital had all the medical records.

If that wasn’t enough, a paternity test would clear everything up.

"Samuel, you had a kidney transplant, yet all these years, you haven’t been able to have a child. Eddie is your only son! Don’t regret this!"

Hearing Rachel’s words, both Samuel and I looked up at the same time.

In each other’s eyes, we saw the same shock.

Becky’s expression flickered with reluctance and panic.

In that moment, I knew Rachel had hit the mark.

Samuel hurriedly pulled his hand away from Becky’s waist and, in a swift motion, snatched my sobbing son from my arms.

Eddie wailed even louder, kicking and punching at him.

"Big meanie! Big meanie!"

But this time, Samuel didn’t seem to mind at all.

Instead, he carefully cupped Eddie’s face, examining him inch by inch.

As he looked, the coldness on his face gradually turned into confusion.

My heart clenched.

Eddie’s eyes and mouth resembled mine.

At first glance, anyone would say we looked alike.

But only I knew that his eyebrows and nose were almost identical to Samuel’s.
